The Heritage town of Kells, situated in the heart of the Boyne Valley, has a rich archaeological, monastic and natural heritage.

As the birthplace of Ireland's Ancient East, the Boyne Valley is renowned for its heritage wonders and Kells is proud to be part of that story. Getting out and about Kells and the Boyne Valley can be a more enjoyable experience if you first visit Kells Courthouse Tourism and Cultural Hub. The staff who work there are extremely friendly & helpful, and are sure to point you in the right direction, we highly recommend their guided tours. There are so many wonderful sites to see & things to do in Kells and the surrounding area, these are just a few of our favourite places to visit.

Kells Monastic Sites & Landmarks

Follow the Kells Heritage Trail and discover Monastic Treasures including the biggest collection of high crosses in one area, Towers & Churches, St Colmcille's house & the Original home of the Book of Kells.

The Spire of Lloyd & the People's Park

This inland lighthouse boasts magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The People's Park includes the "Paupers Graveyard", a playground & picnic area and lovely walks & trails.

Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre

Brú na Bóinne, is Ireland’s richest archaeological landscape, famous for the 5000-year-old passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Ranked with such famous international sites as the great Pyramids of Egypt & the Great Wall of China, but much older.

Loughcrew

The Cairns: one of Ireland's largest Neolithic Passage Graves, older than Newgrange. Located beside these ancient cairns, the Loughcrew Megalithic Centre & the Loughcrew Estate & Gardens.

Girley Bog

A site of considerable conservation significance, an Eco-walk that covers forest and bogland where there is a wonderful variety of bird life, plants and animals. There are 2 loops; one is 6km and the shorter one is 1.5km.

Slane Castle & Slane Distillery guided tour

Learn about the colourful heritage and history of this 18th century castle and the Conyngham family who still reside here & oversee the working distillery. And then enjoy a tutored tasting of their signature Irish whiskey.

Hill of Tara

An evocative place, much celebrated in Irish myth and legend. 'It is said that a quarter of the landscape of Ireland can be seen from the hill'; a beautiful place to go for a walk, enjoy some food & browse in the craft shops.

Trim Castle

The largest (in Europe), best-preserved & most impressive Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. No wonder it has been used as a filming location for many epic movies, most noteworthy- Braveheart. And the town of Trim has the most medieval remains of any town in Ireland.
